Kara Killmer is saying goodbye and “I do” in the final episode of NBC’s Chicago Fire airing Wednesday. Killmer, who starred in Season 3 of the hit firefighter drama, revealed in November that she was leaving the series after a decade as Sylvie Brett.

“This is a natural ending for her character; it was really the perfect ending,” Killmer told Deadline on Friday when asked about her decision to leave. I was selfishly delighted when Sylvie appeared in Chicago, a jilted bride who was thrown at the altar by her high school sweetheart and then across the aisle in her final episode with Matt Casey, the love of her life. I just love that her character was able to come full circle and it was a great way to exit her journey. It was perfect timing,” she added.
Jesse Spencer brought Matt Casey to life from the show’s inception until his official departure at the end of 2021, although he returned for multiple guest appearances. As the preview for the episode titled “Port in the Storm” shows, the couple will get married at a fish shop.

“You know, I think Sylvie has a bit of control and she’s very organized. And so the humor and shock that ensues from this revelation that Tony [Anthony Ferraris] has been talking about an aquarium store this whole time, it’s quite fitting for Firehouse 51. You look at the whole thing and said, ‘Yeah, you need to stay abreast of firefighting; No weddings. Don’t do favors for anyone. Just stay on the team and save everyone’s lives. That’s what you’re good at.” she said with a smile.

Killmer continued, “Ultimately, one of the main points of our show is how the family of 51 makes things work together. I think people will be excited to see how it all comes together. You know, it’s a very unique and challenging space. So it’s interesting to see how they turned it into such a unique place, which I think Jesse would love. I think, he is Australian. He would walk in there and say [Using an Australian accent] ‘Oh, look, fish! I quite like it.’ They did not agree to build an old fire station or this historic church. It was like something no one could have predicted, not even Sylvie.”
Killmer recalled filming her final episode that it was “bittersweet, but definitely more sweet than bitter.” She loved that her final moments as Sylvie were “a giant party that helped make it a great farewell.” Oh, and she admitted that she devoured a lot of the delicious wedding cake — she said she was booked for at least four more hours — which she believes was due to “tears” of the angels”.

Upon further reflection, she said the three tiers consisted of chocolate on the bottom and vanilla on top with cream cheese frosting. “Needless to say, the wedding dress felt tighter by the end of the episode,” she recalls, smiling.

However, there was one small messy thing that she felt was missing.

“I actually asked if I could turn it into a food fight and they said, ‘Let’s not do that to the art department.’ And I said, ‘Okay, fine.’ a pie in the face and I had to be prepared to retaliate appropriately,” Killmer revealed. “But you know, it was great that they brought Jesse back. It would be strange if my character’s journey ended without him there. It really gave her and me the perfect closure.”

After Spencer’s departure as Casey, Sylvie tries to get back into the dating game and continues her life slowly even with Casey constantly visiting from Portland. The love between the characters was so strong and only ultimately accelerated when Spencer left the show, that in the end, it was difficult for Sylvie to continue without him.

“The relationship they’ve had like this has been built over three years. And I think the writers and the fans both felt like he was the one. We tried for a year or two all season to see if she could get past him. She dated Dylan and tried to move on and I think everyone was like, ‘What is this? This is not going to be okay.’ No one accepts it, not even Sylvie. I think those two characters, as they’ve said many times, are just who they are. So it was appropriate that she ended up with him, which I was very pleased with,” she said.

As with Spencer, Killmer revealed she would be happy to return to Chicago Fire.

“You never know what will happen at 51,” Killmer teased. “I think we’ve proven that we like to see familiar faces return, which is also very true of a real fire station. It is a brotherhood and a lifelong family bond. I have th
