‘Yellowstone’ Expands Universe: ‘1932’ & ‘1883’ Season Two – Get Ready for More Epic Dutton Family Sagas!

Paramount Plus Orders More ‘1883’ Episodes, New ‘Yellowstone’ Prequel Series ‘1932’

“Yellowstone” prequel “1883” has been renewed for additional episodes at Paramount Plus, and the ViacomCBS-owned streaming service has ordered another Taylor Sheridan-created origin-story show following the Dutton Family called “1932.” Yes, you guessed it — the show will follow a new generation of Duttons “during the time of western expansion, Prohibition and the Great Depression.”

“1883″ stars Sam Elliott, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Billy Bob Thornton, Isabel May, LaMonica Garrett, Marc Rissmann, Audie Rick, Eric Nelsen and James Landry Hébert.

The show follows the Dutton family as they embark on a journey west through the Great Plains toward the last bastion of untamed America. It is a stark retelling of western expansion and an intense study of one family fleeing poverty to seek a better future in America’s promised land — Montana. It is executive produced by Sheridan, John Linson, Art Linson, David Glasser, Ron Burkle and Bob Yari.

ViacomCBS, soon to be renamed Paramount, revealed the “1883” and “1932” news during its investor day Tuesday, and gave several other updates regarding shows from Sheridan produced under his overall deal with MTV Entertainment Studios.

“Tulsa King,” starring Sylvester Stallone, will hit Paramount Plus in the fall, while “Land Man,” which will star Billy Bob Thornton, and “Lioness,” which has set Zoe Saldaña as its lead and hails from executive producer Nicole Kidman, will debut in 2023. Additionally, “Bass Reeves,” starring David Oyelowo, is eyeing a 2022 start.

“Land Man” is set in the proverbial boomtowns of west Texas and is a modern-day tale of fortune seeking in the world of oil rigs. The series is an upstairs/downstairs story of roughnecks and wildcat billionaires that are fueling a boom so big it’s reshaping our climate, our economy and our geopolitics. Thornton will lead the series as a crisis manager for an oil company.

Based on the notable 11-part podcast “Boomtown,” it will be executive produced by Sheridan, Glasser, Burkle, Yari, Geyer Kosinki and David Hutkin.

“Lioness” is based on a real-life CIA program and follows a marine recruited to befriend the daughter of a terrorist to bring the organization down from within. Saldaña plays Joe, a strong-willed, hard-nosed, station chief of the CIA’s Lioness Program, tasked with training, managing and leading her female undercover operatives working to assassinate the world’s most dangerous terrorists.

It will be executive produced by Sheridan, Glasser, Burkle, Yari and Hutkin. Tom Brady will also serve as executive producer and showrunner. Kidman, with her production company Blossom Films, Saldaña, Kosinski and Jill Wagner are also set to executive produce.

The previously announced “Tulsa King” (formerly known as “Kansas City”), starring Sylvester Stallone, follows New York mafia capo Dwight “The General” Manfredi (Stallone), who, as he’s released from prison after 25 years, is unceremoniously exiled by his boss to set up shop in Tulsa, Okla. Realizing that his mob family may not have his best interests in mind, Dwight slowly builds a “crew” from a group of unlikely characters to help him establish a new criminal empire in a place that to him might as well be another planet. The series marks Stallone’s first starring television role.

It will be executive produced by Sheridan, Terence Winter, Stallone, Glasser, Burkle, Yari and Hutkin. Braden Aftergood is also set to executive produce. Winter will also serve as showrunner.

“Bass Reeves” is a limited series, currently in the development stage, that will bring the legendary lawman of the wild west to life with Oyelowo attached to star as Reeves. Reeves was known as the greatest frontier hero in American history and is also believed to be the inspiration for “The Lone Ranger.” Reeves worked in the post-Reconstruction era as a federal peace officer in the Indian Territory, capturing over 3,000 of the most dangerous criminals without ever being wounded.

It will be executive produced by Sheridan, David Oyelowo, Jessica Oyelowo, David Permut, David C. Glasser, Ron Burkle and Bob Yari. MTV Entertainment Studios, Sheridan’s Bosque Ranch Productions, Oyelowo’s Yoruba Saxon, and 101 Studios will produce. Paramount Plus is eyeing a 2022 production start for the potential show.

Sheridan’s “Mayor of Kingstown” was previously renewed for Season 2.

“Our strategy to franchise our biggest linear hits in real time to supercharge Paramount Plus has far exceeded expectations, with ‘1883’ and ‘Mayor of Kingstown’ already breaking records,” Chris McCarthy, president and CEO of ViacomCBS Media Networks & MTV Entertainment Studios, said. “We are just at the beginning with lots of room to grow on linear and streaming, as we accelerate production on several new Taylor Sheridan series with marquee talent like Sylvester Stallone, Billy Bob Thornton and Zoe Saldana, as well as the next great chapter in the Yellowstone franchise with ‘1932.’”
