When you summarize the position that Jamie Dutton got himself into, there’s no way in my mind that he will survive Yellowstone Season 5. He basically declared war over the Duttons, and Beth can’t wait for an opportunity to end him – pardon me, take him to the ‘train station’ – so it’s basically a matter of time before Jamie, Beth, or both of them die in their fight.
On top of the beef with the Duttons, though, Jamie doesn’t really know the full extent of the manipulation brought upon him by Sarah Atwood, his new lover. I mean, sure, he knows she’s trying to use him, but Jamie doesn’t know the full extent of Sarah’s actions.
All that points in a single direction – Jamie will die by the end of the season and might take some bodies down with him. By that, I primarily think of Beth, his adoptive sister, especially after reading an interview with Wes Bentley with Entertainment Weekly. When asked if Jamie is capable of killing his sister [Beth], Bentley responded:
“I think he has to. There’s an element of: This has to happen now because the play that’s been made only allows for that. He knows this. They’re gonna kill him now, like he thought they would if he played the impeachment game.
He’s a chess player. He’s three steps ahead. He’s thought it through a hundred times. When he says, “It’s over, Beth,” and she says, “No, it’s not,” that’s his cue. “Oh, you’re gonna try and kill me now.” So my move has to be asking for help killing her. I don’t know if he could do it with his own hands.”
And we’re just starting to unpack everything that could happen to Jamie! Let’s dig even deeper.
What could happen to Jamie Dutton in Yellowstone?
Beth killing him
The beef between brother and sister – Jamie and Beth – has been going on for quite a while now. And it hurts them both because, once upon a time, they had the best relationship.
However, with everything that had already happened and Jamie’s constant betrayals, Beth vowed to kill him – or at least release the photo of him dumping a body – if he ever betrayed them again. Now that Jamie called for John’s impeachment, it seems like it’s only a matter of time before this brother-sister beef comes to a bloody end.
Still, it could prove more difficult for Beth than you might think. She loves their father, John, and she knows that Jamie has so much dirt on him that would put him behind bars for good. Beth has to play a careful game here, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they end up killing each other.
Confrontation with John
Another obvious thing that could happen is a confrontation between Jamie and his adoptive father, John. If the dirt on both of them gets out, they’ll both have nothing to lose – and a potential confrontation could prove to be fatal.
In a Behind the Story conversation, Kevin Costner, aka John Dutton, dropped a bombshell that the game Jamie is playing against John might just turn deadly for him:
“They know a lot about each other, Jamie has his fingerprints on a lot. (…) It’s a deadly game that’s being played… And I think Jamie, in his most certain of moments, should be really uncertain.”
Could this mean that John will be the one ending Jamie’s life? We’ll see, we’ll see…
Rip killing him
This is a wild one, but it could very well prove to be correct. Rip Wheeler – Beth’s husband – still doesn’t really know that Jamie had his fingers all over Beth’s untimely abortion. If – and when – he finds out, it might be enough for Rip to go out of his way and end Jamie himself; especially if Jamie and Beth’s beef proves fatal for Rip’s wife.
Sarah & Caroline disposing of him
By now, Jamie certainly knows – or doubts, at least – that Sarah is trying to use him and that she has ulterior motives. However, he doesn’t know the extent of her actions because he doesn’t know that Sarah is actually working for Caroline Weaver – the same Caroline who’s been beefing with John Dutton about getting a piece of the ranch to build an airport.
If Jamie, in some wild twist of narrative, manages to somehow destroy John and the Duttons (I don’t know how that could work in a show about the Duttons, but hear me out), he was promised that he’d take John’s place as the Governor.
However, he doesn’t know that the promise is a lie and that Caroline and Sarah plan on disposing of him as soon as they have no more use for him and his political influence.
Jamie realizing he’s been manipulated
Lastly, this is the one I would love to see happening the most, but I know it would be a huge stretch considering the moves Jamie has made so far in Yellowstone Season 5. I can still hope for some kind of retribution for him, though.
Jamie Dutton has to be the most naive, gullible, easy-to-manipulate person in history, as time and time again, he’s been manipulated by somebody without actually using his own mind. I would love to see him, for once, realize how manipulated he is right now by Sarah, and turn on them, eventually becoming a Dutton again.
I know that it’s silly to hope still, especially after Wes Bentley said, “I don’t know if you should [hold out hope for Jamie to somehow come through and be a Dutton again],” – but I’m not giving it up until I see Jamie Dutton either die or end up in jail for his actions.
